Democratic Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez stated that “anything is possible,” although she assured that her immediate priority is the 2026 midterm elections.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez left open the possibility of competing for the U.S. presidency or seeking a Senate seat in 2028, according to CNBC.

Why it matters: The statement places one of the most visible figures of the Democratic progressive wing among the potential names to watch after the 2026 elections.

During an interview on Sunday on ABC’s “This Week” program, Ocasio-Cortez was directly questioned about a potential presidential campaign.

“I don’t rule out the possibility, and I feel very honored by the enormous support I’ve received,” the New York representative responded.

However, she avoided presenting a potential candidacy as a made decision and asked to keep the focus on the upcoming midterm elections.

“I think we have the responsibility to stay focused on the midterm elections and not on our individual aspirations,” she added.

The limit: Ocasio-Cortez did not announce a candidacy for 2028 nor confirm that she is preparing a presidential campaign.

The congresswoman has represented areas of the Bronx and Queens since 2019 and has become one of the most recognized voices of the Democratic progressive sector.

A Poll Puts Her Ahead of Other Democrats

The statements come as Ocasio-Cortez appears well-positioned in a recent University of New Hampshire poll.

The survey placed her ahead of former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and Democratic Senator Mark Kelly of Arizona.

The fact: The poll offers an early signal of her political recognition, but there are still two years to go before the 2028 presidential elections.

Ocasio-Cortez has also traveled the country alongside independent Senator Bernie Sanders, one of the main figures of the American left.

Sanders competed for the Democratic presidential nomination twice without becoming the party’s candidate.

The Senate Also Appears Among the Possibilities for 2028

The presidency is not the only path that Ocasio-Cortez is keeping open. She was also questioned about a possible Senate candidacy for New York.

That scenario could put her at political odds with Chuck Schumer, the current Democratic minority leader in the Senate, when the election for that seat comes up in 2028.

“I think that right now, anything is possible,” Ocasio-Cortez responded when addressing that alternative.

What’s at stake: A Senate candidacy would open another route to expand her national influence without directly seeking the White House.

The 2026 Elections Remain Her Priority

For now, Ocasio-Cortez insists that the Democratic Party must focus on the midterm elections, which will define control of Congress.
