According to the EFE news agency, Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced that the United States will begin revoking visas of Chinese students.

The measure will particularly affect those linked to the Chinese Communist Party or studying in fields considered “key.”

Rubio issued a statement titled “New Visa Policies Put America First, Not China.”

In it, he stated that the Department of State and the Department of Homeland Security will work “aggressively” to revoke study permits.

The initiative comes amid growing tensions between Washington and Beijing, especially in the educational and technological sectors.

Rubio also announced that visa criteria will be reviewed to increase scrutiny of future applications from China and Hong Kong.

“We want to protect the strategic interests of the U.S. against growing threats,” he wrote on his X account.

However, he did not specify when these policies will take effect or which fields of study will be considered “key areas.”

The lack of clarity has raised concerns among international students, universities, and advocates of academic exchange.

From Beijing, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning issued strong criticism of the measure.

“We urge the U.S. to protect the legal and legitimate rights and interests of all international students,” Mao said in a statement.

China believes that educational cooperation and academic exchanges should not be disrupted by political differences.

China’s response reflects fears that these decisions could seriously impact bilateral relations in education.

Currently, tens of thousands of Chinese students are enrolled in prestigious U.S. institutions.

According to official data, Chinese citizens represent one of the largest groups of international students in the U.S.

At the same time as this announcement, it was revealed that the Trump administration temporarily suspended the issuance of student visas.

Universities fear global negative impact

The suspension aims to pave the way for a stricter immigration policy with greater digital monitoring.

Among the new measures is an intensive review of visa applicants’ social media accounts.

The U.S. outlet Politico reported on the initiative and cited diplomatic sources.

In addition, Rubio reportedly sent a cable to U.S. consulates ordering the immediate suspension of new appointments for F, M, and J visas.

Harvard, target of immigration criticism

Students and participants in academic exchange programs use these types of visas.

Rubio stated that the government will issue the new guidelines “in the coming days.”

The Trump administration has questioned the ideological stance of universities like Harvard.

The president even proposed withdrawing federal funding from the institution, calling it “progressive and antisemitic.”
