What began as an ordinary afternoon ended in a heartbreaking Virginia drowning tragedy that has deeply affected the Guatemalan community in the United States.

María Elena López Solís, 30, died after jumping into a pond to try to rescue her 12-year-old son, Jonathan.

The boy was struggling to stay afloat when his mother entered the water in an attempt to save him.

However, both disappeared beneath the surface and lost their lives despite the rapid response from emergency crews.

How the Virginia drowning tragedy unfolded at a private pond

The incident occurred on Sunday, July 26, shortly before 6:00 p.m., at a property located on Bradley Bridge Road in Chesterfield County, Virginia.

According to the preliminary investigation, Jonathan entered the private pond and began having difficulty staying afloat.

When María Elena realized what was happening, she immediately jumped into the water to rescue her son.

Moments later, both were submerged, prompting an emergency response.

Officers from the Chesterfield County Police Department, firefighters, and emergency medical personnel quickly arrived at the scene.

Rescuers pulled both mother and son from the pond and immediately began life-saving resuscitation efforts.

Despite the emergency crews’ efforts, both were pronounced dead at the scene.

The Chesterfield County Police Department said the investigation remains ongoing to confirm that the incident occurred as investigators currently believe.

Family identifies the victims and launches a fundraising campaign

Although authorities have not officially released the victims’ identities, relatives and friends identified them on social media.

They were María Elena López Solís, originally from the Quiché Department of Guatemala, and her son, Jonathan.

Their deaths have devastated the family, which is now facing the painful process of saying goodbye.

María Elena is survived by her partner and five other children, who are now enduring an especially difficult time following the loss.

In response to the tragedy, relatives launched a fundraising campaign to help cover the expenses resulting from their deaths.

The goal is to return the bodies of María Elena and Jonathan to Guatemala so they can be laid to rest alongside their loved ones.

In addition to repatriation costs, the family hopes to raise funds to cover funeral expenses.

They also aim to provide financial support for María Elena’s partner and her five surviving children.
