The change marks an important move within the cabinet responsible for security and border policy.
The Department of Homeland Security is one of the most influential agencies in the federal government, particularly in matters related to immigration, border control, and national security.
The replacement in its leadership reflects a direct decision by President Donald Trump regarding the direction of that policy.

Trump publicly communicated the decision through a message on social media.
“I am pleased to announce that the highly respected United States Senator from the great state of Oklahoma, Markwayne Mullin, will assume the position of Secretary of Homeland Security,” the president wrote.
Mullin currently serves as a Republican senator representing Oklahoma.

He is also known for his past as a mixed martial arts fighter.
To formally assume the role, Mullin must be confirmed by the United States Senate.
However, a federal law regulating vacancies in the executive branch would allow him to serve as acting secretary.
This could occur while the Senate processes his nomination.
The announcement came after Donald Trump consulted advisers and Republican members of Congress.
The president had asked for possible names to replace Kristi Noem.

Trump also announced that Kristi Noem will assume a new role within his administration.
The former Homeland Security secretary will be designated as Special Envoy for the Shield of the Americas.
This is a new security initiative announced by the president.
According to Trump, the project will focus on the Western Hemisphere.
“The current secretary, Kristi Noem, who has served us effectively and achieved numerous and spectacular results (especially at the border), will become Special Envoy for the Shield of the Americas,” Trump wrote.
The president highlighted the results achieved by Noem during her tenure.
He also specifically mentioned her work on border-related issues.
The new position represents a shift in responsibilities within the administration’s broader security strategy.
Senate confirmation and leadership transition
The appointment of Markwayne Mullin must go through the formal confirmation process in the United States Senate.
That procedure is required to permanently occupy the position of Secretary of Homeland Security.
In the meantime, federal legislation governing executive branch vacancies allows interim appointments.
Under that rule, Mullin could serve as acting Secretary of Homeland Security temporarily.
This would occur while the Senate evaluates his nomination.
The transition comes after Trump consulted political allies about possible replacements.
The president was seeking alternatives within the Republican Party.
With the announcement, Markwayne Mullin emerges as the new leader of the Department of Homeland Security.
The change also redefines Kristi Noem’s role within the administration’s regional security strategy.
