Social Security to Allow Newborn Enrollment in Trump Accounts: What You Need to Know

Posted on07/09/26 at 07:16
The Social Security Administration (SSA) will make it easier for newborns to be enrolled in Trump Accounts for newborns as part of the birth registration process.
The program provides a one-time federal contribution of $1,000 for eligible children who meet specific requirements.
- Why it matters: Families will be able to begin the enrollment process immediately instead of waiting to complete additional paperwork later. However, the full benefit is available only to children who qualify under the pilot program’s eligibility rules.
Social Security Will Update the Birth Registration Process
According to The Center Square, the Social Security Administration is working with hospitals and state agencies to add the option of creating a Trump Account to the paperwork parents complete when registering a newborn.
The change will be implemented through the Enumeration at Birth program, the same process currently used to request a Social Security number for a newborn.
With this update, parents will be able to authorize the automatic creation of a Trump Account while completing the birth registration forms.
If they choose not to enroll at that time, they will still be able to register their child later by submitting IRS Form 4547 or through the Trump Accounts application.

Who Is Eligible for the $1,000 Federal Contribution?
Trump Accounts are tax-advantaged savings accounts designed for minors.
Parents can open an account for children under the age of 18 who have a valid Social Security number.
However, the $1,000 federal contribution is not available to every child.
- According to the official information cited in the report, the initial deposit is limited to children born between January 1, 2025, and December 31, 2028.
- In addition, eligible children must be U.S. citizens and possess a valid Social Security number.
What Changes for Parents?
The biggest change is the simplicity of the enrollment process.
Previously, many families had to complete additional steps after their child was born in order to open the account.
- With the new coordination between the Social Security Administration and hospitals, enrollment can now be incorporated into the paperwork parents already complete at the hospital.
- SSA Commissioner Frank Bisignano said the goal is to allow parents to enroll their children from the very first day of life.
The streamlined process could especially benefit families who are unfamiliar with the program or who typically postpone financial paperwork because of limited time or lack of information.

The Trump Accounts Program Also Faces Questions About Its Cost
Trump Accounts were created under the Tax Cuts and Working Families Act. The program was introduced as part of the celebration of the 250th anniversary of the United States and aims to encourage long-term savings for children from an early age.
However, the initiative has also drawn criticism over its potential fiscal impact.
An analysis by the Joint Committee on Taxation estimated that the accounts could cost more than $15 billion through 2034.
Meanwhile, the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget projected an even higher cost of up to $17 billion by 2028.
According to preliminary data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than 3.6 million children were born in the United States in 2025.
As a result, allowing enrollment at birth could significantly expand participation in the program, although the $1,000 federal contribution will remain limited to children who meet all eligibility requirements.
