Outgoing Kentucky Congressman Thomas Massie launched sharp criticism against President Donald Trump and members of the Republican Party after losing his district primary to a candidate backed by the president.

Massie spoke about his defeat during an interview on NBC’s “Meet the Press” on May 24.

The lawmaker said his electoral defeat was related to his support for releasing more government information about Jeffrey Epstein.

Massie lost the May 19 primary election to Ed Gallrein, a former Navy SEAL backed by Trump.

The Republican is thus ending a seven-term run in the House of Representatives.

Thomas Massie Links Defeat to Epstein Files

According to USA TODAY, during the interview with Kristen Welker, Massie said his biggest conflict with the political establishment was pushing for the release of files related to Epstein.

The congressman co-authored the bill called “Epstein Transparency” with Democratic Representative Ro Khanna.

The proposal sought to clarify federal information related to financier and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

“I think the biggest crime I committed against corruption, Kristen, was showing the American people that someone on the right could join with someone on the left and get something done,” Massie said.

The Republican argued that both Republicans and Democrats have called on the government to release more documents related to Epstein.

Donald Trump signed a law last year requiring the release of documents related to the case.

However, some critics believe there is still more information that should be made public.

Trump and Epstein had a public friendship decades ago.

They later distanced themselves in the early 2000s.

The president has always denied wrongdoing and has never been charged with any crime related to Epstein.

Republican Criticizes Trump’s Influence

Massie’s defeat came one week after Republican Senator Bill Cassidy also lost his reelection bid.

Trump had publicly urged voters to remove him from office.

Representative Julia Letlow received the most votes and advanced to a runoff along with State Treasurer John Fleming.

The elections were seen as a test of Trump’s influence within Republican primaries.

Massie also criticized the legislative proposal pushed by Trump known as the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act.”

The congressman was one of two Republicans who voted against the initiative.

According to Massie, the legislation would add around $3.8 trillion to the deficit.

Despite the electoral defeat, the lawmaker said it was worth challenging Trump and other members of his party.

During the interview, Massie said some Republican sectors suffer from what he called “Trump disappointment syndrome.”

The congressman was referring to the term “Trump derangement syndrome,” frequently used by the president against his critics.

Massie said there is now growing discontent among conservative voters.

According to him, the Republican Party has alienated sectors that helped Trump return to power in November 2024.

Among them, he mentioned advocates of fiscal austerity, supporters of the “Make America Healthy Again” agenda, and people opposed to U.S. intervention in foreign conflicts.

Massie Also Questions Trump’s Ballroom

During his NBC appearance, Massie said he would continue standing up to Trump during the remaining seven months of his term.

“I have seven months left to keep going against the current, which means voting for principles and for people over party,” he said.

The congressman also criticized Trump’s proposed ballroom project.

Massie called the proposal an “outrageous waste of money.”

The statement came after Kristen Welker asked him whether the Republican Party was beginning to distance itself from the president.

In recent days, several Republican senators expressed concern about the $1 billion proposed for security tied to Trump’s ballroom project.

The initiative has drawn criticism mainly from left-leaning sectors.

Trump has repeatedly said the White House ballroom would be financed through private donations.

The president has insisted that taxpayer money would not be used for the project.
