What seemed like a typical children’s celebration at a Montessori school in Austin, Texas, ended with a 4-year-old boy hospitalized after accidentally ingesting a lollipop with THC that was included in a gift bag.
According to his mother, the child began showing unusual behavior shortly after eating the candy, with clear signs of drowsiness and changes that raised alarm at home.
After checking the product wrapper, the woman discovered that it contained THC, the main psychoactive component of cannabis, prompting her to immediately contact the school and take the child to a hospital.
The boy remained hospitalized overnight while doctors monitored his condition and administered intravenous fluids to stabilize him.
Intense Symptoms in Children
Exposure to THC can cause more pronounced effects in young children because of their lower body weight and because their bodies are still developing.
Symptoms reported in these cases include extreme drowsiness, increased heart rate, dizziness, disorientation, and difficulty communicating clearly.

The mother described her son’s heart rate as elevated and said his behavior was not normal, which increased her distress during the hospitalization.
She also said the child had episodes of confusion and made incoherent comments, a situation she described as especially alarming because he is preschool-aged.
Delay in Notifying Families
The incident occurred on May 22 at The Nest at Anderson Mill school, where gift bags were distributed during the birthday party.
According to the mother, although she immediately informed the institution, the general notice to other families was sent nearly 48 hours later, without initially specifying that the product contained THC.
Some parents expressed dissatisfaction over the time that passed before the formal notification, arguing that timely information was key so they could check the gifts received by their children.
After the case became known, several families expressed concern and some chose to temporarily withdraw their children from the education center.

Investigation Closed Without Charges
The Austin Police Department confirmed that it investigated the case and concluded that the lollipop’s presence in the bag was accidental.
Authorities said they found no indication that any adult had deliberately given the product to the children, nor evidence of criminally negligent conduct.
For that reason, the investigation was closed without charges, although the Texas Health and Human Services Commission continues an administrative review of what happened.
School administrators said they will review internal protocols and evaluate new safety measures to strengthen controls and prevent similar incidents in the future, People reported.
