Shocking Images of Nepal Flooding: 55 Dead and 403 Missing

The Nepal flooding emergency struck communities near the Tibetan border and destroyed roads, bridges and hydroelectric infrastructure while the search for survivors continues.
At least 55 people were killed and another 403 remain missing after a massive flood struck northern Nepal on Wednesday, according to EFE.
- Why it matters: Among the missing are 341 foreigners, while emergency crews race against time in an area where widespread destruction is complicating rescue operations.

The massive surge of water came from the Tibet region and hit the communities of Timure, Rasuwagadhi and Syabrubesi particularly hard.
Images released from Nepal show flooded communities and severe damage to infrastructure across this mountainous region.
- By the numbers: EFE reported that 22 concrete bridges and five Bailey bridges were destroyed along the stretch between Rasuwa and Dhading Galchhi.
The flooding also damaged a hydroelectric power plant and disrupted one of the main overland routes connecting Nepal with Tibet.
Helicopters Search for Hundreds of Missing People
The Nepal Army confirmed to EFE that at least 29 people had been rescued after the Bhote Koshi River overflowed.
Six military helicopters and eight others operated by private companies were deployed to locate and transport survivors.
- The search: Authorities are trying to determine the whereabouts of hundreds of people while assessing damage to villages, markets, roads and hydroelectric projects.
Authorities Investigate What Caused the Nepal Tragedy
Nepal’s Foreign Affairs Minister Shishir Khanal said an earthquake may have triggered a major landslide that blocked the river and later caused the Nepal flooding.
Authorities continue to assess the cause and full extent of the disaster, while Nepalese President Ram Chandra Paudel called for all available resources to be mobilized to intensify rescue operations.
