After nearly 34 years of marriage, Michelle Obama shared what she believes has been one of the main pillars that has strengthened her relationship with former President Barack Obama.

The former first lady spoke about her life as a couple during an interview with PEOPLE, held on the occasion of the opening of the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago, the city where they met, built a family, and began the journey that eventually took them to the White House.

Far from focusing on politics, the conversation was centered on personal memories, reflections about their story together, and the way they have faced the challenges of more than three decades of marriage.

Michelle Obama says they have always been each other’s balance

One of the most memorable moments of the interview came when Michelle Obama explained how she understands the dynamic that has kept the couple together throughout all these years.

“We are each other’s counterbalance.”

The former first lady explained that both of them have played different but complementary roles within their relationship.

“The truth is that I probably would have been someone who stayed more still. I think I would have had a beautiful life here, but it would have been smaller. But because of who my husband is, he offered all of us — our daughters, my mother, and my family — a broader vision of what was possible in life.”

Michelle added that Barack Obama encouraged her to imagine a different future even before entering national politics.

“He made me think more broadly about what I could do with this Harvard Law degree, beyond just being a lawyer. He gave me courage.”

Barack Obama recognizes that Michelle always keeps him grounded

During the conversation, Barack Obama also spoke about the role his wife has played in his life since they began their relationship in Chicago.

The former president recalled that from very early on, he understood he was with an exceptional woman.

“I knew almost immediately, and it seems like I made a very good bet, that she was a unique woman, with the integrity, character, intelligence, and values to make me a better person.”

Obama said that influence continues to this day.

“Simply being with her made me a better person and still does.”

After hearing her husband’s words, Michelle once again highlighted the support she has always felt during the most difficult moments.

“He was my support. It was like saying to me: ‘I have your back.’ And no matter how difficult things have been, with all the ups and downs, he has always been there for me.”

Barack responded with a brief phrase that summarized how he views their marriage

“She keeps me grounded. It has worked pretty well for us.”

The couple remembers how their love story began in Chicago.

The interview also brought back memories from the early years of their relationship.

Michelle Obama explained that when they started dating, Barack lived in a small rented apartment on 53rd Street in Chicago.

“It didn’t have air conditioning. The windows stayed open. On Saturday nights there was a lot of activity.”

She also recalled that one of their favorite outings was visiting a Baskin-Robbins ice cream shop.

Barack added that it was there where they shared their first kiss

“We were sitting on the sidewalk. Now there is even a plaque there. I don’t know who put it there.”

Both agreed that Chicago continues to hold a special place in their story because it was the city where they built the foundation of their family.

Michelle Obama says she is proud of the man she shares her life with.

During the interview, Michelle Obama also took the opportunity to publicly recognize the role her husband played during his years in the White House and after leaving the presidency.

“My husband is always thinking about shining the light on other people.”

She later added that this quality remains one of the traits she admires most about him.

“I am very proud of the way my husband took on that role and how he shows up every day.”
