Mexico’s World Cup dream came to an end in the Round of 16. The Mexican National Team lost 3-2 to England in a thrilling match at Estadio Ciudad de México, ending its 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign.

Javier Aguirre’s squad entered the match after an impressive group-stage performance and four consecutive victories but was unable to avoid another exit in the knockout stage.

Mexico controlled much of the first half and nearly opened the scoring when Raúl Jiménez forced England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford into an outstanding save.

However, England quickly turned the match around with two consecutive attacks.

In the 36th minute, Jude Bellingham finished a cross from Bukayo Saka to give England a 1-0 lead.

Just two minutes later, a mistake while Mexico was playing out from the back led to another England attack, with Bellingham once again finding the back of the net to make it 2-0.

Far from giving up, Mexico pulled one back before halftime when Julián Quiñones fired home a powerful shot in the 42nd minute.

Raúl Jiménez threatened again before the break, but another excellent save from Pickford denied Mexico an equalizer.

Early in the second half, England was reduced to 10 men after Jarell Quansah was sent off following a VAR review.

Despite having the numerical advantage, Mexico suffered another setback when Harry Kane converted a penalty to extend England’s lead to 3-1.

El Tri answered once more. Raúl Jiménez scored from the penalty spot in the 69th minute to cut the deficit and revive hopes of a comeback.

During the closing minutes, Mexico threw everything forward in search of an equalizer, pressing relentlessly through stoppage time.

England’s defense held firm, and the final whistle confirmed Mexico’s elimination from the tournament.

Once again, the Mexican National Team exited in the Round of 16 of a FIFA World Cup.

Despite the disappointment, Javier Aguirre’s squad delivered several encouraging performances throughout the tournament. However, it once again fell short at the decisive stage and will have to wait another four years for another opportunity to break through the Round of 16 barrier.
