The White House is undergoing a temporary adjustment in its communication dynamics following the announcement by Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt.

On Friday, April 24, 2026, it was confirmed that she will step away due to the birth of her second child, expected next week.

The news has drawn attention from media outlets and followers of President Donald Trump’s administration, according to Univision.

  • Why it matters: The role of press secretary is key in managing the relationship between the government and the media. Her absence temporarily changes how official messaging is delivered.

White House Redefines Its Communication Strategy

According to journalist Dasha Burns of Politico, Leavitt is expecting a baby girl.

After the birth, she will take maternity leave, although the exact duration has not been specified.

During this period, the White House will not appoint an official replacement for press briefings.

Instead, various figures are expected to rotate at the podium.

These may include Vice President JD Vance, cabinet members, and even President Trump himself.

These appearances will help maintain communication with the press during Karoline Leavitt’s maternity leave period.

While Leavitt is away, daily press operations will continue under the coordination of Steven Cheung.

Cheung, the White House communications director, will work alongside the existing team.

This group includes Pat Adams, Anna Kelly, Kush Desai, Abigail Jackson, Liz Huston, and Taylor Rogers.

Also part of the team are Davis Ingle, Allison Schuster, Olivia Wales, Micah Stopperich, and Ellie Acra.

The team is completed by Georgia O’Neil and Kieghan Nangle.

All of them will continue handling communications duties during this period.

The internal structure remains intact, though without a single central figure leading press briefings.

Karoline Leavitt Confirms Temporary Departure

Karoline Leavitt herself confirmed her upcoming absence during a press briefing.

“Finally, on a personal note, this will probably be my last time seeing you for a while,” she said.
“As you can see, I’m about to have a baby at any moment, so I will be stepping away briefly.”

The official expressed confidence in the team that will remain in place.

“I know you will be in very good hands with my team here at the White House.”

She also emphasized continuity in official communication.

“Of course, you all have the president’s number, so there will be no shortage of statements or information from this building while I’m away.”

Leavitt concluded with a message about her return.

  • “I look forward to seeing all of you again very soon.”

What’s Next: The White House will maintain its flow of information through a flexible structure while awaiting Leavitt’s return from maternity leave.

This evolving approach will define how communication is handled during the maternity leave period of Karoline Leavitt.
