Kamala Harris said Friday that she has not yet decided whether she will run for president of the United States in 2028, despite being considered one of the leading potential Democratic candidates.

According to EFE, the former vice president said her immediate priority is the midterm elections scheduled for November 3.

  • Why it matters: A decision on the Kamala Harris 2028 presidential run could significantly shape the future Democratic presidential race. However, before looking ahead to the White House, the party is focused on regaining control of Congress from Republicans.

During an event in Tennessee, the 61-year-old former vice president declined to confirm whether she would launch another presidential campaign, saying she has not yet made «a decision» about the 2028 election.

According to EFE, Harris explained that she is «fully focused» on the November congressional elections, which are considered crucial because they will determine control of Congress, currently held by Republicans who support President Donald Trump.

She also argued that the Democratic Party must achieve «the highest voter turnout» in its history to prevent what she described as Republican efforts to «manipulate elections.»

  • What’s at stake: Control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate will shape how much legislative support President Trump has during the remainder of his term.

The Democratic nomination race remains wide open

Although the 2028 presidential election is still several years away, several prominent Democrats are already being discussed as potential candidates.

The Kamala Harris 2028 presidential run remains one of the party’s biggest question marks following her role as the Democratic presidential nominee in 2024.

Potential Democratic candidates include:

  • Gavin Newsom
  • Pete Buttigieg

Speculation is also beginning within the Republican Party about the post-Trump era.

According to current reports, Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio are among the Republicans most frequently mentioned as potential presidential candidates, since Trump is constitutionally barred from seeking a third term.

Kamala Harris rules out California governor’s race but leaves the door open for 2028

The former vice president had previously considered running for governor of California, her home state, in the election scheduled for next November.

She ultimately decided not to enter that race, a move that fueled further speculation about a possible return to national politics.

Harris made history as the first woman to serve as vice president of the United States and became the Democratic presidential nominee in 2024 after then-President Joe Biden ended his reelection campaign.

She was defeated in that election by Donald Trump, who returned to the White House.

  • What’s next? Harris did not provide a timeline for announcing whether she will pursue a 2028 presidential run, while the Democratic Party continues to focus its efforts on the upcoming November congressional elections.
