  • China retaliates against Trump’s tariffs.
  • Beijing enforces new trade restrictions.
  • Escalating tensions in the US-China trade war.

Unlike Canada and Mexico, which have sought negotiations with President Donald Trump after the imposition of new tariffs, China has taken a different approach.

Learning from the first US-China trade war, Beijing has made it clear that any dialogue must be conducted on equal terms and has implemented strategies to minimize the impact of Washington’s economic sanctions.

Chinese leaders reacted swiftly, imposing retaliatory tariffs on agricultural products and other US imports.

This time, the world’s second-largest economy refuses to be caught off guard as it was during Trump’s first term, responding firmly to each new trade restriction.

China Escalates Trade War with Tariffs on US Goods

Since Trump returned to office seven weeks ago, US tariffs on Chinese goods have increased by 20%.

In response, Beijing imposed up to 15% tariffs on key agricultural products, suspended US lumber imports, and banned 15 American companies from operating in China.

The strategy is clear: China does not seek confrontation, but it will not back down without a proportional response.

«As Washington intensifies tariffs, Beijing sees no choice but to retaliate,» explained Sun Yun, director of the China Program at the Stimson Center.

The Chinese government’s stance has hardened, echoing the early days of the 2018 trade war.

«If the US wants a war—whether it’s a tariff war, a trade war, or any other type of war—we are ready to fight until the end,» China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs declared in a recent statement.

Chinese President Xi Jinping has led China through both of Trump’s terms, allowing him to develop a long-term strategy to counter Washington’s protectionist policies.

According to Daniel Russel of the Asia Society Policy Institute, Xi has opted to avoid rushed negotiations with Trump to prevent appearing weak. «Xi will not take the role of a supplicant,» Russel stated.

China has diversified its trade relations, reducing its dependence on US exports. Most of China’s soybean imports now come from Brazil and Argentina. The percentage of Chinese goods exported to the US has decreased.

Investment in technology and education has strengthened China’s economy, which continues to grow at nearly 5% annually despite trade tensions.

Impact of the trade war on North America

While China strengthens its position, the US’s main trade partners—Canada and Mexico—have sought negotiations with Trump to ease tariff pressures.

However, both countries continue to face increasing trade tensions.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum have warned of negative economic impacts.
Trudeau met with Trump in December to discuss the tariffs but expressed frustration with Washington’s unclear responses.
Sheinbaum reiterated that «no one benefits from these decisions.»

«Now is the time to respond forcefully and show that a trade dispute with Canada will have consequences,» Trudeau warned.

An Uncertain Future

Although China appears better prepared for this new phase of trade tensions, the future of US-China relations remains uncertain.

Analysts warn that Trump’s aggressive trade tactics could lead to further escalations in the coming months.

With a shifting global economy, Beijing’s stance remains firm:

China does not seek confrontation but it will not allow its economic growth to be undermined without an equivalent response.
