Prominent activist and content creator Carlos Eduardo Espina commented on the departure of Ecuadorian television host Alejandra Jaramillo from Univision following her celebrations and remarks after Mexico’s defeat in the World Cup.
Espina addressed the issue after receiving numerous questions from followers on social media, describing the network’s decision as predictable and understandable from the standpoint of workplace ethics and respect for the network’s primary audience.
He argued that Jaramillo showed poor judgment, noting that the television network serves a predominantly Mexican audience and has strong ties to that community.
“We know Alejandra is from Ecuador, and she’s already been fired. People keep asking what I think, and honestly, it seems logical to me. Anyone with common sense could see it coming… There’s a saying: you don’t bite the hand that feeds you. In other words, you don’t insult the people who support your career.”
The Limits of Free Speech in the Private Workplace
Responding to criticism that described Jaramillo’s dismissal as censorship, Carlos Eduardo Espina explained how freedom of expression works in the United States, emphasizing the distinction between constitutional protections and the employment policies that govern private companies.
Espina argued that while individuals are free to express their opinions, private employers also have the legal right to discipline or terminate employees if their actions harm the company’s interests, reputation, or values.
He stressed that workplace consequences do not amount to a violation of free speech rights when an employee’s conduct negatively affects the audience or customers the company serves.
“In the United States, freedom of speech exists. Yes. It protects you from government retaliation, but it doesn’t protect you from every consequence… If I say something I shouldn’t have said, I have the right to say it, but I don’t have the right to expect there will be no consequences.”
He added:
“I think what she did was completely unnecessary, especially considering she worked for a company with a largely Mexican audience. I don’t understand why you would mock the very people who support your work. People need to think before insulting those who put food on their table.”

Espina’s comments sparked widespread discussion online, with users from different countries expressing opposing views about both Univision’s decision and Alejandra Jaramillo’s actions.
Many members of the Mexican community supported the network’s decision, agreeing with Espina that media personalities should show respect for the audience they serve.
Others defended Jaramillo, arguing that she was simply celebrating a sporting result in her personal time and that her dismissal was excessive.
