The Alejandra Jaramillo controversy erupted after Ecuadorian television host and actress Alejandra Jaramillo, popularly known as «La Caramelo,» became the center of a major social media storm.

What began as her celebration of Mexico’s elimination by England in the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup quickly escalated into an intense online dispute that could eventually move into U.S. courts under allegations of defamation.

The tension began when Jaramillo, who currently works for Univision, posted a series of Instagram Stories.

In the videos, she appeared jumping with excitement after England’s victory while telling Mexican fans that she would continue making fun of them.

Alejandra Jaramillo Says She Is Not Afraid of the Backlash

Adding fuel to the controversy, the TV personality posted a video showing herself receiving a Mexico national team jersey while saying: «I told you I bring bad luck to every jersey I touch. I just didn’t tell you it would take a few more days.»

The reaction from Mexican fans was immediate. Thousands of users described the comments as disrespectful, pointing out that the Mexican audience represents a significant portion of TelevisaUnivision’s viewership in the United States.

According to reports, Alejandra Jaramillo’s celebration came after Mexico’s previous 2-0 victory over Ecuador, a match in which many Ecuadorian supporters had expected their team to win.

Chamonic Targets Alejandra Jaramillo’s Personal Life

The controversy intensified when Mexican entertainment blogger Chamonic published a post criticizing Jaramillo’s personal life. In her post, Chamonic made allegations linking Jaramillo’s past to organized crime and wrote: «Now I understand why she touched her boyfriend and now he’s unlucky and unemployed… That’s why her life is cursed. That’s why she was supposedly involved with a drug trafficker, and he was killed because of her.»

These are allegations made by Chamonic and have not been established as fact. Many of Chamonic’s followers supported her position, repeating the phrase, «If you can dish it out, you should be able to take it,» while some called on Univision to remove Jaramillo from television.

Alejandra Jaramillo Warns of a Lawsuit

Following the online accusations, Alejandra Jaramillo publicly responded, saying she had instructed her attorneys to pursue legal action in the United States.

She wrote: «I’m speaking with my lawyers to sue you right now because in the United States what you’re doing is called defamation. You’re making serious claims that are completely false. You’re bringing up someone who is no longer alive and using the word ‘drug trafficker,’ which has absolutely no truth to it.»

She added that the legal notification would arrive soon. Chamonic, meanwhile, maintained that the information she referenced is publicly available and can be found online. While the legal dispute continues to unfold, Jaramillo has shared inspirational and spiritual messages on her social media accounts, indicating that she feels protected despite the criticism.

Who Was Efraín Ruales?

The allegations circulating online revived memories of one of the most painful events in Alejandra Jaramillo’s life: the murder of her former boyfriend, Ecuadorian television presenter Efraín Ruales.

According to Metro Ecuador, Ruales was a well-known television host, actor, and musician recognized for his work on the program En Contacto.

On the morning of January 27, 2021, he was shot while driving in northern Guayaquil shortly after leaving the gym.

He died at the scene after suffering a gunshot wound. According to Telemundo, investigators at the time believed the killing had been carried out by hired assassins. The tragedy profoundly changed Jaramillo’s life and ultimately led her to leave Ecuadorian television and relocate to the United States.

Daniel Salcedo’s Name Emerges During the Investigation

According to Univision, Daniel Salcedo Bonilla became an important figure during the investigation. Jaramillo testified before Ecuador’s Attorney General’s Office that she knew Salcedo, who was being investigated in connection with the case while already serving prison sentences for corruption-related offenses.

According to her testimony, also reported by TC Televisión, Salcedo allegedly tried to approach her through mutual acquaintances and expensive gifts that she says she refused.

Alejandra Jaramillo stated: «On one occasion he sent me a gift through a friend… A few days later he called and said I should accept it because it was a $500 watch. I told him no.» Jaramillo also testified that Salcedo attended the same CrossFit gym she frequented but said they never had any relationship and that Efraín Ruales was fully aware of the situation.

According to Univision, additional controversy arose after a video allegedly showed Salcedo in prison displaying bottles of a beverage brand for which Ruales had served as spokesperson. The incident reportedly led to Salcedo’s transfer to another correctional facility.

Months before his death, Ruales had posted a video denying any illegal connections and stating that he had received threats after speaking publicly against corruption.

Social Media Reaction

The comments section beneath Chamonic’s publication quickly filled with criticism directed at Alejandra Jaramillo. Many users repeated the phrase, «If you can dish it out, you should be able to take it.»

Some demanded that Univision terminate the Ecuadorian host’s contract. One user commented: «You work for a company associated with Televisa, a Mexican company. Mexican viewers should stop following her so she can no longer profit from them.»

Others mocked Jaramillo’s legal warning: «Yesterday she couldn’t stop laughing, today all she talks about is lawsuits.» «Now she’s going to sue everyone because the information is on Google.» «She got on the ride but couldn’t handle it.»

Other commenters argued there is a difference between celebrating a sporting result and deliberately provoking fans.
