U.S. Cancels More Than 175,000 Visas

The administration of President Donald Trump reported that the State Department has revoked more than 175,000 US visas belonging to foreign nationals as part of a review and enforcement policy launched in 2025.

According to the agency, reasons that can lead to a visa revocation include violations of visa terms, certain crimes, fraud, abuse of the immigration system, and circumstances that authorities consider a threat to national security.

Why are US visas being canceled?

The State Department said that a large portion of the revocations was related to encounters between visa holders and law enforcement.

Among the main reasons cited were assault, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, theft, and drug-related offenses.

The department also cited cases involving reckless driving, sexual assault, child abuse, fraud, and embezzlement.

Marco Rubio and foreign-policy cases

The administration also said that Secretary of State Marco Rubio has determined that some foreign nationals may be deportable based on foreign-policy considerations.

As examples, the State Department mentioned a Cuban citizen allegedly linked to an influence operation by the Cuban government and Iranian citizens allegedly connected to the Iranian government.

Does the policy also affect foreign officials?

Previous reports have indicated that the United States may have revoked visas belonging to foreign politicians and officials, including Mexican nationals.

However, the State Department maintains that it does not publicly comment on individual cases because of confidentiality rules protecting visa records.

Visas revoked over alleged “birth tourism”

The Trump administration also said that a US embassy in North Africa revoked more than 100 visas belonging to parents who were traveling to the United States so their children could be born on US soil.

The government has linked these cases to its crackdown on what it calls “birth tourism.”

Government warns that reviews will continue

The State Department said it will continue its screening operations to determine whether foreign nationals still meet the conditions under which their visas were issued.

“A US visa is a privilege, not a right,” the department said while defending the policy.
