The administration of Donald Trump has introduced a new application called CBP Home, designed to allow undocumented immigrants to notify U.S. authorities of their voluntary departure.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem announced the measure as part of a cost-saving strategy for immigration enforcement operations.

According to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), self-deportation is the «safest option» for undocumented foreigners and will allow significant cost savings for Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

Unlike CBP One, the app launched under the Biden administration that allowed thousands of migrants to apply for legal entry with a sponsor, CBP Home serves the opposite function—encouraging voluntary departures.

«The Biden administration exploited the CBP One app to allow over a million foreigners to enter the United States illegally,» Noem stated.

«With the launch of CBP Home, we are restoring integrity to our immigration system,» she added.

The DHS claims that this new platform will streamline the departure process for undocumented immigrants and allow resources to be redirected toward individuals with criminal records.

Noem also stated that those who leave voluntarily could apply for legal re-entry in the future.

However, she did not clarify whether migrants would still face the three, five, and ten-year bans imposed under the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA).

«CBP Home gives undocumented foreigners the option to leave now and self-deport, which could allow them to return legally in the future and achieve the American Dream,» Noem said.

«If they don’t take this opportunity, we will find them, deport them, and they will never return,» she warned.

In addition to the app, the Trump administration has introduced a new database where certain immigrants will be required to register.

According to the DHS, failure to provide the required information could result in criminal penalties.

This measure appears to target immigrants who have not yet been detected by authorities, as border agents already collect data on those apprehended at the border.

Legal permanent residents and those who entered with temporary authorization are exempt from registration, but the administration is working to expand its control over the undocumented population.

Experts warn that this new system could pose risks for immigrants who have lived in the U.S. without undergoing formal inspection.

Trump’s administration continues to tighten immigration policies in an effort to curb irregular migration in the U.S and encourage self-deportation.
