Tropical Storm Hernán formed on Thursday in the Pacific Ocean, although it currently does not pose a threat to land, according to Univision.

At the same time, another weather system is moving towards Hawaii and could bring heavy rain, flooding, and hazardous conditions over the weekend.

Why it matters: While Hernán remains far from land, Hawaii is facing a different scenario with the arrival of the potential tropical cyclone Uno-C.

Cyclone in Hawaii Increases Meteorological Concern

Tropical Storm Hernán was located approximately 1,460 miles west of the southern tip of the Baja California Peninsula, Mexico.

The National Hurricane Center (NHC) reported that its maximum sustained winds were around 40 mph.

The system was moving west and, according to available information, did not pose a threat to land.

The formation of Hernán occurs while meteorologists are also keeping an eye on another system located much closer to the Hawaiian Islands.

This phenomenon could generate complicated weather conditions in Hawaii from Friday night and over the weekend.

Possible Tropical Cyclone Uno-C Moves Towards Hawaii

The possible tropical cyclone Uno-C was approximately 775 miles east-southeast of Hawaii, according to NHC information.

The system had winds of around 40 mph, but it still did not have enough organization to be considered a tropical storm.

However, forecasts indicated that it could strengthen as it continues to move towards the Hawaiian Islands.

Meteorologists pointed out that the system could make landfall on the southern part of the Big Island on Saturday.

By then, there is a possibility that the phenomenon will have become a tropical storm.

Before its possible arrival, conditions are expected to deteriorate in the islands starting from Friday night.

The system could bring intense rain, strong winds, and hazardous surf to different areas of the archipelago.

These conditions are keeping attention focused on the amount of rain that could accumulate during the passage of the phenomenon.

Rain Could Cause Flooding and Landslides

One of the main risks associated with the possible tropical cyclone Uno-C will be the amount of rain forecast for Hawaii.

Meteorologists estimated general accumulations of between 5 and 10 inches in different areas of the archipelago.

However, some areas could register considerably higher amounts during the passage of the system.

According to the NHC, there is a possibility of accumulations of up to 51 centimeters, equivalent to about 20 inches of rain.

These precipitation levels could significantly increase the risk of flooding and landslides in the Hawaiian Islands.

Hazardous surf and strong winds are also part of the expected conditions from Friday night.

The situation will be different from that of Hernán, which remains over open waters of the Pacific and far from the Mexican coast.

Meteorological attention is thus focused on Hawaii due to the possibility that Uno-C could strengthen before approaching the Big Island.

Saturday will be a key moment, given the possibility that the system could arrive on the southern part of the island as a tropical storm.
