Undocumented Immigrant Bit an ICE Officer’s Hand During Arrest

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) condemned a violent attack against an ICE agent that occurred in Tullos, Louisiana, where Maximiliano Perez-Perez—an undocumented immigrant with a criminal record—bit an officer’s hand while resisting arrest. The agent sustained a bleeding injury.
During the operation, Perez-Perez attempted to flee by pushing officers and used his teeth as a weapon, breaking the agent’s skin. He is now facing charges for assaulting a law enforcement officer.
According to DHS, Perez-Perez entered the United States at an unknown date and location, without being inspected or authorized by an immigration officer.
Maximiliano Perez-Perez’s Attack is Part of an Alarming Increase in Assaults
DHS Deputy Secretary Tricia McLaughlin reported a sharp rise in violence against immigration agents, citing a 1,150% increase in assaults against ICE officers and an 8,000% increase in death threats.
“This is the reality our agents face every day while enforcing the law,” McLaughlin stated.
Criticism of Sanctuary Policies
DHS argued that many of these assaults occur, according to the agency, as a result of rhetoric from public officials and sanctuary policies that encourage undocumented immigrants to evade arrest.
Call to Reduce Tensions
The department urged politicians, activists, and media outlets to “lower the tone” and stop promoting resistance or violence against law enforcement.
