- Hospital Operation Sparks Controversy
Tensions escalated in Brooklyn early Saturday morning following an operation by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) that sparked protests and clashes with police.
The incident took place at a hospital in the Bushwick community, where masked agents carried out an arrest that quickly caused chaos in the area.
Why it matters: The operation triggered outrage in a city considered a “sanctuary,” where cooperation with immigration authorities is limited and closely scrutinized.
According to circulated videos, a man ran into the hospital while being chased by an immigration agent.

Protesters threw trash bins into the street, blocking traffic and forcing police intervention.
So far, the identity of the detained individual and the reasons for the ICE operation at the hospital remain unknown.

Images show that shortly after 2 a.m., agents exited the building with a Black man.
The detainee actively resisted arrest while being dragged by agents.
As they went down a set of stairs, he was placed on the ground face up, handcuffed, without shoes, and wearing a hospital wristband.

A witness told amNewYork that one of the agents “came out pointing a gun at everyone.”
The same witness said the man was dragged across the ground while handcuffed.
Videos also show agents trying to lift the detainee into a vehicle.
The maneuver was difficult due to the man’s resistance and pressure from protesters.
During the arrest, ICE officers can be heard ordering the crowd to step back.
One agent was holding a black canister believed to contain pepper spray.
The use of this irritant caused injuries, including to a police officer and a federal agent.
Police Response and Consequences
The New York Police Department stated it did not cooperate with ICE in the arrest.
It said its presence was to control a protest that turned violent.
Authorities reported that protesters were blocking traffic and throwing objects.
According to amNewYork, the night ended with nine people arrested.
The same outlet reported that an ICE vehicle accelerated through the crowd and struck a person.
The condition of the injured individual has not been disclosed.
The incident has raised questions due to New York’s status as a sanctuary city.
Such jurisdictions limit cooperation with immigration authorities without a judicial warrant.
So far, Mayor Zohran Mamdani has not commented on the incident.
The lack of official information leaves questions about the ICE arrest at a Brooklyn hospital and its implications.
