Hezly Rivera earns spot on US Olympic gymnastics team

Hezly Rivera, with Dominican roots, has become a source of pride for the Hispanic community.
The young athlete secured a spot on the powerful USA women’s gymnastics team that will compete in Paris, where they arrive as favorites.
Rivera turned 16 on June 4th and last Sunday became the youngest athlete representing the USA at the upcoming Olympics.
The Olympics will commence on July 26th in Paris, France.
What You Didn’t Know About Hezly Rivera
According to Efe, Hezly Rivera is the daughter of Dominican immigrant Henry Rivera.
This Hispanic athlete shares the team with Olympic veterans Simone Biles, Suni Lee, Jade Carey, and Jordan Chiles.

After a stellar performance in the trials in Minneapolis, where she secured one of the five spots, she has gained more popularity among Hispanic communities.
Especially in Hackensack, New Jersey, where she was born, and in Texas, where she has lived and trained since she was five years old.
A group of girls welcomed Hezly Rivera at the Dallas, Texas airport, where she arrived on Monday night after the competition.
“I’ve worked very hard to get here… so I’m enjoying the process and feeling very blessed.»
«I thank God every day and the people on my team and my coaches,” the Latina athlete told the local NBC station upon arriving in Dallas.
Meanwhile, Hezly Rivera’s father, originally from Santo Domingo, expressed that he cannot describe the emotion of the moment and thanked everyone who has supported his daughter.
Her mother, Heidy Ruiz, and younger brother have also been fundamental to her goals.

In an interview last Sunday, Biles affectionately referred to Hezly Rivera’s age:
“She’s so young. She doesn’t even know how to drive! Should we teach her to drive before we get to Paris?” (Efe).
