A powerful explosion of a gas truck with a 49,500-liter capacity rocked the eastern part of Mexico City, leaving at least three people dead and seventy injured, according to Mayor Clara Brugada.
From the scene, Brugada reported that among the injured were 51 men and 16 women, plus two individuals still unidentified.
She also noted that 28 vehicles were damaged by the blast and that the Mexico City Prosecutor’s Office is conducting forensic investigations to determine the cause.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum expressed solidarity with the victims’ families and praised the emergency services that responded to the tragedy in Iztapalapa.

The president stressed that the National Civil Protection Coordination, the National Guard, the Defense Ministry, and the federal hospital network are working alongside local authorities to support those affected.
The truck involved belonged to Transportadora Silza, S.A. de C.V., part of Grupo Tomza, with transport permits approved by the National Energy Commission.
However, the Agency for Safety, Energy and Environment (ASEA) reported that the company had no registered civil or environmental liability insurance policies, a mandatory requirement for such operations.
Authorities confirmed that the driver survived and is hospitalized after being injured in the accident.

According to Myriam Urzúa Venegas, Secretary of Comprehensive Risk Management and Civil Protection of Mexico City, the tragedy began when the tanker overturned, releasing gas that led to the explosion.
Videos shared on social media show the moment of the rollover, the leak, and then a massive fireball engulfing cars and pedestrians nearby.
The injured suffered mainly from second- and third-degree burns and gas inhalation, according to EFE.
Affected Area and Preliminary List
The accident occurred around 2:30 p.m. near Puente de la Concordia and Calzada Ignacio Zaragoza, one of the busiest routes between Mexico City and the State of Mexico.
Amid family uncertainty, Mayor Brugada announced that a preliminary list of 68 injured individuals would be published, though she warned that the names must still be verified by authorities.
