Authorities in Ohio are investigating one of the most disturbing alleged child abuse cases in recent years after discovering 16 minors living in what officials described as «deplorable» conditions inside a rural home in Vinton County.
The operation ended with the arrest of four adults, who now face child endangerment charges, while several of the children were rushed to hospitals for emergency medical treatment because of the severity of their conditions.

The Ohio Bureau of Investigation and the Vinton County Sheriff’s Office executed a search warrant at a home in the small community of Hamden, where they discovered the 16 children.
The children ranged in age from 18 months to 18 years old and included both boys and girls, authorities said.
According to investigators, several of the children were in critical condition when they were found. Two were airlifted to Level I trauma centers due to the seriousness of their injuries.
Ohio Attorney General Andy Wilson described the scene as one beyond comprehension.
«Conditions you can’t even imagine anyone living in—let alone children.»

Following the discovery, authorities arrested Gary Siders Jr., Gary Siders Sr., Christina Siders, and Elizabeth Siders.
As of now, none of the four had appeared for formal arraignment or been assigned a public defender.
They are scheduled to appear in court Wednesday morning to face the criminal charges.
Wilson said it was the worst scene he has encountered throughout his professional career and summarized the situation with a blunt statement.
«Pure evil.»
The attorney general added that the investigation remains active and that authorities continue to process evidence at the property.
Investigation Continues as Authorities Seek Answers
Officials said investigators have not yet determined whether all 16 children are related to one another.
Authorities also stated that, at this time, they do not believe this child neglect case involves human trafficking.
Investigators said the four adults were not residents of Hamden and appeared to have been traveling when they arrived in the area.
Hamden is a rural community of fewer than 1,000 residents located about 60 miles (97 kilometers) southeast of Columbus, Ohio.
Vinton County Prosecutor William Archer said the four suspects are charged with second-degree felony child endangerment because the case involves «serious physical harm.»
As investigators continue working to determine how the children came to be living in those conditions and what relationship they had with the four adults, authorities said their top priority is ensuring the children’s medical care, safety, and long-term protection.
«Justice will be served for these children,» Wilson said.
