Minnesota Governor Tim Walz declared a state of emergency following an increase in protests in Minneapolis, according to EFE.

The decision came after the death of a woman who was shot by agents of Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

The incident occurred on Wednesday in Minneapolis. The woman was identified as a 37-year-old white American citizen.

The death sparked demonstrations and social tension in the city. Walz asked the state’s National Guard to prepare for a potential scenario of civil unrest.

The announcement was made at a press conference. The governor emphasized that public safety and maintaining normalcy are the top priorities.

Preparations for Possible Civil Unrest

Walz recalled the summer of 2020 as an immediate precedent. At that time, Minneapolis was the epicenter of massive protests during the pandemic.

Those mobilizations followed the death of African American George Floyd, a case that triggered nationwide protests against police brutality.

The governor stated that the state must be ready and that authorities cannot improvise in the face of a similar scenario.

“We have activated the State Emergency Operations Center,” Walz said. He added that the National Guard and local police are coordinating efforts.

State patrol leadership remains in direct communication with Minneapolis police. The goal is to respond in an organized manner to the rise in demonstrations linked to the Minnesota ICE shooting emergency.

Walz did not specify the exact conditions under which troops would be deployed, emphasizing that the preparations are preventive.

The state has approximately 7,500 troops at training centers. The issued order serves as an operational warning.

Clash of Narratives Between the State and the White House

President Donald Trump reacted to the woman’s death by describing her as a “professional agitator.”

Trump claimed that the woman aggressively ran over an ICE agent. According to the president, the shooting was in self-defense.

The governor rejected that characterization, calling the incident “unnecessary” and “preventable.”

Walz stated that Minnesota is facing a chaotic situation, attributing the unrest to the largest-ever deployment of federal agents.

According to the governor, there was no communication with local authorities, which he said increased risk and tension.

He also questioned the Department of Homeland Security, rejecting the claim that the shooting was justified as self-defense.

DHS accused the woman of “domestic terrorism,” an argument Walz said he doubts.

“This is not about politics,” the governor said, stressing that public safety is the central issue.

Call for Peaceful Protests in Minnesota and Political Context

Walz acknowledged public anger following the incident and urged demonstrators to act peacefully.

He called on people to “not take the bait” of the federal government and warned of the risk of escalating violence.

Minneapolis already experienced severe unrest in 2020, and that memory remains present in the collective consciousness.

The governor promised to protect the population and ensure constitutional rights are respected.

He did not clarify when the National Guard would be formally activated, reiterating that its role would be protective.

The events unfold amid a broader political controversy. Walz announced that he will not seek a third term.

That decision followed controversies involving multimillion-dollar fraud cases linked to childcare programs.

The investigations involve ties to the Somali community and have marked the end of his political cycle.
