The elected president of the United States, Donald Trump, is once again stirring controversy with his comments on strategic territories around the world.

In a social media post, Trump stated, «For reasons of national security and freedom worldwide, the United States of America considers that the ownership and control of Greenland are an absolute necessity.»

This statement was not well received by Múte Egede, the Prime Minister of Greenland, who responded sharply:

«Greenland is ours. We are not for sale, and we never will be. We must not lose our long struggle for freedom.»

Greenland, an Arctic island with over 50,000 inhabitants, is an autonomous territory of Denmark.

In 2019, during his first term, Trump had already mentioned the possibility of buying Greenland, but the island’s leaders rejected any such notion then and now.

Trump also suggested the U.S. should «take over» the Panama Canal

The comment raised alarms in the Central American country.

Panamanian President José Raúl Mulino declared, «Every square meter of the canal belongs to Panama and will continue to belong to Panama.»

In response, Trump posted a brief but provocative message: «We’ll see!»

The Panama Canal, built by the United States in the early 20th century, was officially transferred to Panama’s control in 1977.

This happened thanks to a treaty signed by then-president Jimmy Carter.

Currently, the canal is managed by the Panama Canal Authority and serves as a crucial shipping route for global commerce.

A History of Controversial Proposals

According to the U.S. Department of State, 72% of the ships crossing the canal have U.S. ports as their destination or origin.

Donald Trump’s intention to acquire Greenland is not new and reflects his interest in strategic territories.

However, both Greenland and Panama have made it clear that their territories are not for sale.

These statements could further strain diplomatic relations between the United States and these regions, reported CBS News.
