According to the EFE news agency, the arrest of two wildland firefighters in Washington state by immigration agents has triggered strong political and social backlash.

Governor Bob Ferguson and Senator Patty Murray, both Democrats, condemned the actions of President Donald Trump’s administration on Thursday.

Officials criticized prioritizing immigration enforcement over the work of those risking their lives to fight wildfires.

The incident occurred while the firefighters were working on the Bear Gulch fire in Olympic National Forest.

According to the Department of Natural Resources, the two men were part of a private contractor crew deployed to the area.

The arrests took place Wednesday when agents from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) arrived at the operations site.

For more than three hours, the agents demanded identification from the teams working to contain the fire.

The action created tension among the hundreds of workers present at the wildfire emergency.

Governor Ferguson said he was “deeply concerned” about what happened and ordered an immediate investigation.

The state leader reminded the public that the priority must be community safety and wildfire containment.

He emphasized that interrupting firefighters’ work with immigration arrests endangers human lives and worsens the emergency.

The Bear Gulch fire is currently the largest active wildfire in Washington state.

Immigration Arrest of Firefighters and Sanctuary Cities

According to official data, as of Wednesday morning the fire had consumed about 9,000 acres, equivalent to 3,642 hectares.

The flames had spread to areas east of Seattle, with only 13% of the wildfire contained.

The arrest of the firefighters caused outrage among lawmakers, unions, and civil rights organizations.

Democratic Senator Patty Murray described the action as a perverse reflection of the federal government’s immigration policy.

Consequences for Public Safety

“This new Republican policy of arresting firefighters on the job is as immoral as it is dangerous,” she said in a statement.

Murray added that firefighters are essential in a context where wildfires have devastated entire communities on the West Coast.

She emphasized that the work of firefighters must be protected, not hindered by mass deportation policies.

The arrest of the firefighters was seen as a direct blow against sanctuary cities.

Tensions Between DHS and Washington

These cities, including Seattle, New York, Portland, and Los Angeles, limit the cooperation of local police with immigration authorities.

On Thursday, Tom Homan, the Trump administration’s border policy czar, warned that operations would intensify in those cities.

The threat includes more frequent raids and demands for identity checks on workers in different sectors.

The case in Washington is one of the first high-profile incidents showing this strategy being applied in emergency contexts.
