According to La Opinión, Madison Pestana, a young woman born in North Carolina and living in Florida, never imagined that her political support would so deeply affect her personal life.
Once convinced that voting for Donald Trump was a way to support national security, she now finds herself caught between hospitals and detention centers after the arrest of her Venezuelan husband by ICE.
The case reflects the human impact of immigration policies on thousands of mixed-status families in the United States.
Her story has become a testimony of the disillusionment felt by some young voters who once trusted Trump’s message of security and order.

Madison Pestana met Juan, a Venezuelan who arrived in the U.S. in 2021, at a sushi bar in 2023.
The two quickly fell in love and decided to marry within a few months.
For Madison, who was studying medicine, Juan became her main source of emotional support.
“He is literally my best friend, the only person who really understands me,” she said in an interview.
The Arrest That Changed Madison Pestana’s Life
Since that first date, they had never gone more than six days apart.
Everything changed with an ICE raid in Miami that sent her husband to a detention center in Broward.
The arrest came just before Madison’s graduation as a doctor — a moment that should have been a personal triumph.
Juan had no criminal record, but was detained for overstaying his visa.
Madison Pestana Questions Trump’s Policies
The situation worsened when a notary incorrectly filed his residency application, leaving him at risk of deportation.
After the arrest, Madison moved to Jacksonville to begin her surgical residency.
Now she lives alone in a two-story house, driving long distances every weekend to visit her husband in detention.
“They don’t allow us to hug more than twice during each visit,” she lamented.

Distance and pain have become part of her new routine.
Madison Pestana admits that during the presidential campaign she viewed Trump’s immigration plan favorably.
She believed deportations targeted only criminals and that the country would be safer.
However, Juan’s detention completely changed her political perspective.
Denouncing Inhumanity and Injustice
“What is happening right now is not justice. This is inhumane,” Madison Pestana denounced.
“They promised they would make the country safer. Is my life safer now? It is much more dangerous after they took my husband away,” she added.
Meanwhile, Juan faces an uncertain future from the detention center.
In Venezuela, he left behind the political and social crisis that forced him to seek asylum in the U.S.
The Past and Life in Florida
In Florida, he managed to establish a small construction business before meeting Madison Pestana.
Now he watches as their plans collapse in just a few months.
“I built my life here. I met my wife, and I want to stay because I already have a family. This country is also mine,” he said.
If his asylum petition is denied, he has considered self-deporting to Portugal.
