U.S. President Donald Trump ignited controversy once again with his remarks during a press conference held in the Oval Office as part of Women’s History Month celebrations.

When asked to define what a woman is, Trump responded: “A woman is someone who can have a baby under certain circumstances.”

The comment triggered immediate reactions from across the political spectrum, with supporters echoing his views and critics accusing him of reinforcing outdated gender stereotypes.

“A woman is someone much smarter than a man—I’ve always known that,” Trump added, before shifting the conversation to criticize the inclusion of transgender women in female sports.

During his remarks, Donald Trump defended the executive order he signed during his first term that bans trans women from participating in female sports categories.

He described the policy as a way to “protect” female athletes—a justification that has been widely rejected by LGBTQ+ advocates and feminist groups alike.

His comments about the value of women stand in contrast to his personal history. Trump has faced numerous allegations of sexual misconduct, including a 2023 civil court verdict that found him liable for sexually abusing journalist E. Jean Carroll and ordered him to pay $5 million in damages.

Despite this, Trump went so far as to call himself “the president of fertility” during a recent event celebrating Women’s History Month, a statement that quickly drew mockery and criticism on social media.

A pattern of controversy

Donald Trump’s stance on gender issues and women’s rights has been contentious since his rise to political power.

His executive actions limiting the rights of transgender women in sports, along with his frequent gender-related remarks, have bolstered support among conservative voters but alienated feminist organizations and diversity advocates.

In an attempt to soften his remarks, Trump concluded his Friday address by saying, “Women are incredible people who do a lot for our country and who we love.” Still, the conciliatory tone did little to extinguish the firestorm ignited by his earlier comments.
