New York Will Send “POWER” Checks of Up to $200 to Residents: Payment Date, Beneficiaries, and Amounts

New York approved a new economic relief program that will send checks of up to $200 to millions of residents affected by rising electricity and gas rates.
The measure is part of the 2026-2027 state budget and seeks to ease the impact that energy costs have had on households, especially in a context of persistent inflation and increasingly high bills.

The so-called New York POWER checks will arrive automatically for those who meet certain income and residency requirements, with no need to submit an additional application.
New York POWER Checks Will Begin Being Sent Between September and December
The “Protecting Our Wallets” program, known as POWER, was announced by State Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie along with Energy Committee Chair Didi Barrett.
Both said the aid is intended to respond to growing frustration over the cost of utilities in New York.
According to the approved budget, payments will be sent between September and December 2026 and will be based on state tax returns for the year 2024.
The goal of the program is to offer direct relief to families and workers who have faced constant increases in energy bills in recent years.
“Through no fault of their own, New York utility customers pay some of the highest rates in the country,” Heastie said in an official statement released by the State Assembly.
Who Will Receive the Payments and How Much Money Will New York Provide?
The amounts will vary depending on the type of tax filing and the income level reported by each taxpayer.
The state confirmed three main groups of beneficiaries:
- Couples who filed jointly and have income below $150,000 will receive a $200 check.
- Couples with income between $150,000 and $300,000 will receive a $150 payment.
- Individuals who file separately and earn less than $150,000 will receive a $100 check.
Authorities said the payment will be automatic for eligible full-time New York residents, using tax information already available to the state.
So far, no exact date has been announced for each deposit or mailed payment, although the state government said payments will begin to be distributed during the fall.
The Budget Includes More Measures to Lower Energy Costs
In addition to the New York POWER checks, the state budget includes new policies aimed at containing future rate increases.
Governor Kathy Hochul’s office explained that the plan includes reforms to modernize the Public Service Law and require greater oversight of spending by utility companies.
Among the included measures are new rules to link executive compensation to consumer affordability and restrictions to prevent customers from paying for expenses considered unnecessary, such as lobbying activities or corporate travel.

The budget also includes additional investments in the EmPower+ program, which helps low- and middle-income households finance energy-efficiency improvements.
According to official state data, nearly 42,000 households have already received support through this program, achieving average savings of about $600 per year on utilities.
