The community of West Valley City, Utah, is in shock after what appears to be a murder-suicide.
It left five people dead and a teenager severely injured.
According to local police, a 42-year-old man allegedly killed his 38-year-old wife and three of their children, aged 11, 9, and 2.
The man reportedly then took his own life, as reported by USA TODAY.

The tragic discovery was made on Tuesday night when a concerned family member entered the garage after noticing the mother had not shown up at work. In the garage, they found the eldest son, 17, gravely injured with a gunshot wound to the head. The mother and two daughters were found in an upstairs bedroom, while the bodies of the father and the 11-year-old son were located in the living room.
Details of the Attack
A small handgun was found beneath the man’s body, which authorities believe was used in the attack.
“All the victims appear to have suffered gunshot wounds,” stated Roxeanne Vainuku, a spokesperson for the police department.
The injured teenager managed to escape the scene of the attack and sought refuge in the garage.
While hospitalized in West Valley with a “severe brain injury” and unable to communicate, investigators remain hopeful for his survival despite the family tragedy he has experinced.

So far, no suicide note has been found, and there is no record of domestic violence in the household.
Authorities are continuing to investigate the reasons behind this devastating event.
“We understand how frustrating it is not to know why a tragedy of this magnitude occurred,” said Vainuku.
“The truth is, we may never know.”

West Valley Mayor Karen Lang and the city council released a statement urging support for the affected family and the first responders handling the case.
“We will work together to heal as a community,” they affirmed.
West Valley police continue to gather information and urge anyone with relevant details about the case to contact them, according to USA TODAY.
