Mediotiempo reports that Julio César Chávez Jr., son of the legendary Mexican champion, will be released from the Federal Center for Social Readaptation No. 11 in Hermosillo, Sonora.
The boxer will continue his legal process in freedom after a federal judge modified the precautionary measure that had kept him in preventive detention.
His release comes just days after entering prison on charges of organized crime linked to violations of the Federal Firearms and Explosives Law.
The boxer’s case has generated enormous controversy in both Mexico and the United States due to the proximity of the legal proceedings to his sporting career.
From the Ring to International Arrest
Julio César Chávez Jr. was bound over for trial but released under the restriction of not leaving Mexico. His lawyer argued that the FGR relied only on “anecdotes” and that the only outcome was extending the investigation by three more months. After his fight against Jake Paul at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California, on June 28, Chávez Jr. was arrested in the United States on July 3.
The arrest stemmed from alleged ties to the Sinaloa Cartel, marking a drastic turn in the boxer’s life.
On August 19, at 11:53 a.m., he was deported to Mexico to face national justice.
Mexican authorities sent him to CEFERESO as a preventive measure, charged with organized crime for arms trafficking.

However, on Saturday night, journalist Jorge Morales Borbón revealed that the boxer would be released within hours.
The information was confirmed by judicial sources, who explained that Chávez Jr. remains bound over for trial but no longer in prison.
With this decision, a new phase opens for the fighter, who will face hearings and rulings under conditional release.
The case has been marked by constant judicial changes that keep the public highly attentive.
The Ovidio Guzmán Connection
Julio César Chávez Jr.’s ties to figures linked to organized crime have been at the center of the controversy.
In 2022, during a live Instagram broadcast, the boxer admitted to being close to Ovidio Guzmán López, known as “El Ratón.”
Ovidio is the son of Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán, one of the founders and historic leaders of the Sinaloa Cartel.
“I hang out with everyone—guys selling gum, flowers, the Toys, with El Ratón… I get along with everybody,” he said at the time.
Julio César Chávez Jr. Prison and Reactions
The comment sparked strong reactions due to the country’s climate of violence and drug trafficking.
On that occasion, Chávez Jr. also clarified that his relationship with Guzmán López was neither constant nor deep.
“I get along really well with Ovidio, but we don’t even see each other, honestly; I have a lot of affection for him and I don’t want to know anything about what they say,” he added.
Those remarks reignited rumors of alleged ties to the criminal organization.
Sporting and Legal Future in Doubt
Although no concrete evidence was ever presented, those statements continue to be cited in his legal proceedings.
The boxer has maintained a controversial profile both inside and outside the ring, accumulating episodes of personal and professional scandal.
His fight against Jake Paul marked his return to the ring amid doubts about his physical and mental condition.
The defeat to the YouTuber-turned-boxer was widely covered by the sports press.

Days later, his arrest made headlines in Mexico and abroad, surrounded by rumors and judicial leaks.
Now, the judge’s decision to release him while the trial continues opens debate on the strength of the accusations.
The case will be closely monitored by Mexican authorities and by the public, who have followed the boxer’s career with astonishment.
The Chávez family, led by Julio César Chávez Sr., has not issued recent public statements on the matter.
