  • ICE arrests more immigrants.
  • Record number is reflected.
  • Mass deportation operation.

The Customs Immigration and Control Service (ICE) carried out a mass raid last Monday.

Arresting 1,179 immigrants in a single day, a record figure that reflects the intensification of the migratory policies of the Trump administration.

This operation marks a new daily maximum in arrests, after the federal government promised to accelerate the raids and captures as part of its strategy to reinforce immigration control throughout the country.

According to ‘EFE’, only 52 % of detainees were classified as «criminal arrests.»

Which means that they had a criminal record or pending judicial cases in their countries of origin.

The rest of the detainees, more than 48 %, corresponds to people without criminal history, whose only position is to have illegally entered the United States.

Monday’s operation took place in the framework of a sustained increase in ICE activities since Donald Trump’s possession, on January 20.

In general figures, more than 4,000 immigrants have been arrested since Trump took office.

With a rhythm of arrests that has oscillated between 400 and 593 people daily during the last week.

On Sunday, the figures reached a peak of 950 detainees, only to be surpassed by the historical day of Monday.

Tom Homan, known as the ‘Tsar of the Border’ and in charge of supervising the immigration policy of the administration, reaffirmed his commitment to intensify the operations.

«The priority is to stop criminal immigrants and keep our country safe,» he said.

«These actions are not only necessary, but are what is expected of this government,» Homan said in a statement.

ICE actions have been criticized by human rights defenders.

Who question the strategy of classifying certain immigrants as «dangerous criminals.»

According to US legislation, crossing the border without adequate documentation constitutes a civil offense, not a criminal offense.

However, mass arrests include both those who have pending legal processes and immigrants whose only fault is to have entered the country without authorization.

The raids and the increase in arrests have generated a climate of fear among immigrant communities in the United States.

In cities such as Los Angeles, New York and Houston, activists report that many families are choosing not to send their children to school or go to their work for fear of being arrested.

«This type of mass actions not only separate families, but also sow panic in entire communities,» said Carolina Miranda, spokesman for an organization of immigrants.

The detainees face different processes, from immediate deportation to the possibility of appealing their cases.

However, legal resources are usually limited, especially for those without access to legal representation.

The Trump government has made it clear that its migratory approach will be relentless.

“These figures are just the principle of what we intend to achieve. We will not tolerate the presence of illegal foreigners to violate our laws, ”said Tom Homan.

Meanwhile, thousands of immigrants face uncertainty about their future.

Fearful of becoming the next victims of these massive raids.

The debate on ethics and implications of these immigration policies remains open.

Dividing even more to a polarized nation around the issue of immigration.
