The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) announced that eight individuals identified as “undocumented immigrants” were arrested during an anti-drug raid on Wednesday afternoon at a restaurant in northeastern Minnesota.

St. Louis County Sheriff Gordon Ramsay reported that agents from ICE, the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), the U.S. Border Patrol, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), and members of the Lake Superior Violent Offender Task Force participated in the operation.

The raid took place at a business located near East 18th Street and Third Avenue East in Hibbing, Minnesota.

Sheriff Ramsay explained that the action was part of an ongoing investigation that began last month.

During the operation, one person was arrested on charges of cocaine distribution and illegal possession of firearms, according to CBS News.

Authorities also confirmed finding several false identification documents in the suspect’s possession.

Additional ICE Arrests

After the initial arrest, a restaurant employee told Northern News Now that ICE agents began detaining individuals who lacked proper documentation to remain in the country.

“The Sheriff’s Office is aware that federal law enforcement officers carried out additional actions during this search,” stated Sheriff Ramsay.

“The federal investigation is independent of this case; therefore, we have nothing further to add,” he concluded.

ICE has not released the names of the eight detainees, nor confirmed whether they face federal criminal charges or are being held in immigration custody pending deportation proceedings.

Local authorities indicated that the main case — involving drug trafficking and weapons possession — remains under investigation, while the immigration arrests occurred as part of a parallel federal enforcement action.

Context of Federal Operations in Minnesota

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem recently visited Minneapolis to discuss ICE operations in the state of Minnesota.

During her remarks, she reported that since January, more than 4,300 individuals “committing crimes while in the county illegally” have been arrested.

Of that total, 3,316 people have criminal records, according to data released by Noem.

The secretary also said that ICE agents have been “unfairly demonized” in the state, but federal operations will continue and additional personnel will be deployed to the region.

Earlier this month, ICE agents arrested a team of four roofers while they were working in the backyard of a home in St. Paul.

A spokesperson for the agency stated that three of the men had prior criminal convictions and will face deportation proceedings.

State and federal officials have not confirmed whether that case is connected to the Hibbing restaurant raid, though both operations are part of ICE’s broader strategy to enforce immigration and criminal laws throughout Minnesota.
