The company announced the recall of approximately 8.2 million containers, including food jars and beverage bottles.

The decision comes after more than two dozen people reported incidents, some with severe consequences.

  • Why it matters: The issue is not only a technical defect, but a direct safety risk for consumers, with cases requiring medical attention and irreversible consequences.

Reports of Serious Injuries Due to Internal Pressure Prompt Thermos Recall

According to USA TODAY reports, the notice was published on Thursday, April 30, on the website of the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).

Thermos recalled about 5.8 million Stainless King jars and approximately 2.3 million Sportsman bottles.

The problem is related to pressure buildup inside the containers.

If perishable food or drinks are stored for a prolonged period, the stopper can be forcefully ejected when opened.

This effect can cause direct impact to the face or body of the user.

Reported consequences include lacerations and serious injuries.

As of April 30, the company had received 27 reports of incidents requiring medical attention, including three cases of permanent vision loss.

The recalled products were sold over more than a decade across multiple retail channels.

They were available in stores such as Target and Walmart nationwide.

They were also sold online through Amazon.com, Walmart.com, Target.com, and Thermos.com.

The approximate price of these items was $30.

The sales period spans from March 2008 to July 2024.

The Thermos models affected by the recall are identified by numbers printed on the bottom.

For Stainless King jars manufactured before July 2023, the models are SK3000 and SK3020.

Sportsman food and beverage bottles correspond to model SK3010.

Specific sizes include:
SK3000 (16 ounces), SK3020 (24 ounces), and SK3010 (40 ounces).

What Consumers Should Do Now

Thermos advised consumers to stop using the recalled products immediately.

The company offers different solutions depending on the product type.

For SK3000 and SK3020 jars, users must discard the stopper.

They must then send a photo of the discarded stopper to the company.

In return, they will receive a free replacement pressure-relief stopper.

For SK3010 bottles, the process is different.

Consumers must return the defective bottle to Thermos.

The company will provide a prepaid shipping label to complete the return.

This massive recall represents one of the company’s largest consumer safety actions.

The scale of the issue and the risks involved have prompted an immediate response to prevent further incidents under the Thermos recall 2026.
