What began as a quiet afternoon in Mount Prospect, a suburb northwest of Chicago, turned within minutes into a scene of tension and collective fear.

The usually calm and diverse Mount Prospect suburb became the center of a large-scale ICE operation, according to CNN.
A Department of Homeland Security (DHS) helicopter hovered overhead while several black SUVs and trucks with tinted windows slowly patrolled the streets.

Witnesses reported seeing about twenty federal agents wearing masks and tactical gear walking through yards and sidewalks.
For some, it was just another law enforcement operation — but for others, it represented the continuation of aggressive immigration enforcement policies that have instilled fear in immigrant communities nationwide under President Donald Trump’s administration.

Far from staying silent, the people of Mount Prospect came out to observe, record, and share what was happening.
With phones in hand, residents began documenting every movement of the federal agents.
The Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights (ICIRR) — which manages an alert network tracking ICE activity — confirmed “high levels of immigration enforcement activity” in Rolling Meadows, Wheeling, Prospect Heights, and Mount Prospect.
The message also warned that “at least four people had been detained.”
Despite the fear, the Mount Prospect community responded to the ICE operation with solidarity. Neighbors checked on one another, ensuring the safety of immigrant families. Others gathered outside their homes, demanding answers from the agents.
That night, Mount Prospect became part of a growing movement of grassroots resistance and documentation of ICE operations across Chicago’s suburbs.
“They Don’t Belong Here”: A Neighbor Speaks Out
Among those who reacted was Dawn Ardito, a local resident and small business owner.
After receiving the alert messages, she grabbed her phone and driver’s license and rushed outside.
As she reached the end of her block, she saw a convoy of ICE vehicles with masked agents.
Without hesitation, she followed them to a nearby street, where more SUVs and officers had gathered. She joined a group of Mount Prospect neighbors recording the scene and demanding answers from the ICE agents as they carried out their operation.
“They don’t belong here,” Ardito told the agents. “Our neighbors belong here. The members of our community belong here.”
According to her account, agents said they were searching for a “wanted criminal.”
Over the course of the operation, however, the suspect’s description changed multiple times — from “gang member” to “murder suspect,” and later “sex offender.”
The shifting explanations only deepened residents’ mistrust, who demanded transparency about the purpose of the raid.
A suburb that rarely makes headlines, Mount Prospect suddenly became a symbol of the growing tension between federal immigration enforcement and local communities determined to resist through unity and civic action.
What began as fear turned into a statement: that solidarity and documentation remain powerful tools against the uncertainty brought by operations like this ICE raid in Illinois.
