Immigrant crossings at the southwestern U.S. border have dropped to their lowest level in recorded history, the White House announced Tuesday.
In March, only 7,180 crossings were registered—the lowest monthly total ever—an achievement the Trump administration attributes to the effectiveness of its immigration policies.
According to a statement from U.S. Border Patrol, the figure represents “the lowest number of border crossings in history.”
The drop is especially notable compared to the 8,347 crossings in February and the 29,101 in January, the month when the Biden administration transitioned out and Trump resumed office.

The contrast is even starker when compared to March 2024, which saw 137,480 crossings.
In response to that migration crisis, the Biden administration was forced to impose restrictions on political asylum—measures that remain in place.

Authorities also noted a sharp reduction in daily apprehensions along the southwest border, which have dropped to approximately 230 per day—a figure without precedent.
Tom Homan, the U.S. Border Czar, stated that in over 40 years with Border Patrol, he does not recall a single month with such low numbers.
Meanwhile, Pete Flores, Acting Commissioner of US Customs and Border Protection (CBP), affirmed that Trump’s policies have given Border Patrol agents unprecedented authority to curb illegal migration.
“The message is clear: the border is closed to illegal crossings. Those who challenge our resolve will be prosecuted and deported,” Flores emphasized.
At the same time, CBP signed new contracts in March to continue construction of the border wall—one of Trump’s key campaign promises during his first presidential run.
This move aims to bolster control and security at the border, according to EFE.
