  • New System to Control Unknown Pathogens.

China is implementing a monitoring system to identify pneumonias of unknown origin, a key measure to prevent public health emergencies.

This initiative aims to avoid the lack of preparedness that the country faced five years ago with the emergence of COVID-19.

The National Administration for Disease Control and Prevention announced that the system will include protocols for laboratories and health control agencies.

Additionally, in an official statement, an increase in acute respiratory diseases was confirmed during the week of December 16 to 22, 2024, according to Reuters.

According to Kan Biao, a government official, China will experience an increase in respiratory infections this winter and spring, although the total cases will be lower than last year.

Among the recently detected pathogens, rhinovirus and human metapneumovirus (HMPV) stand out, as reported by Reuters.

The impact of HMPV on children under 14 is rising in northern provinces.

HMPV, first identified in 2001 in the Netherlands, is a causative agent of acute respiratory diseases.

What Causes Metapneumovirus?

According to the Faculty of Medicine at UNAM, this virus primarily affects children under 5 years old, the elderly, and immunocompromised individuals, as reported by N+.

The metapneumovirus ranks as the second most frequent etiological agent in respiratory tract infections.

Currently, there is no vaccine or approved prophylactic treatments for HMPV, according to Cofepris in Mexico.

Symptoms include fever, cough, runny nose, sore throat, and difficulty breathing.

How is It Transmitted?

Additionally, metapneumovirus is easily transmitted through sneezing, hugging, or contact with contaminated surfaces.

By establishing this monitoring system, China seeks to be better prepared for unknown pathogens.

This approach highlights the importance of epidemiological surveillance to anticipate potential health crises.

Meanwhile, it is recommended to maintain hygiene measures such as hand washing and disinfecting surfaces to prevent respiratory infections.
