Once upon a time in the distant land of the Cherokee Indians, there was an ancient tradition that marked the transition from youth to adulthood.
It was known as the «Rite of Passage of Cherokee Youth,» and every young Cherokee eagerly awaited the day when they would undergo this test.
A brave young man was about to face this challenge. It was time, the day came when his father, a wise and respected man of the tribe, took him deep into the forest, blindfolded.
The young man’s heart beat strongly, but he knew this rite was essential to demonstrate his bravery and maturity.
The Passage of Youth
Upon reaching the forest, his father left him alone in a clearing and said: «Son, you must sit on this log all night with your eyes blindfolded.
You must not remove the blindfold until the first rays of the sun light up the sky. You cannot ask for help from anyone, and you must confront your fears.»
With a lump in his throat, the young man nodded and sat on the log. The night fell around him, and the sounds of the forest began to fill his ears.
He listened to the wind whispering through the trees, the crunching of dry leaves under his feet, and the mysterious sounds of the nocturnal fauna.
His Father
The young Cherokee felt alone and vulnerable. He was afraid that wild beasts might surround him in the darkness or that some stranger might stalk him.
But he knew he had no choice but to endure. He kept his blindfold in place, and his resolve remained strong.
The night seemed eternal, full of fear and uncertainty. But finally, when the first rays of the sun began to illuminate the horizon, the young man removed his blindfold.
It was then that he saw his father, who had been by his side all night, silently watching over him to protect him from any danger.
We Are Never Alone
Tears sprang from the young man’s eyes, not only from the relief of having survived the test but also from realizing that he had never been alone in that darkness.
His father had cared for him in silence, just as God looks after all of us, even when we cannot see Him.
From that day on, the young man understood the importance of trusting in God during difficult times. He knew that just as his father had protected him in the dark forest, God was always by his side, even when circumstances seemed overwhelming.
And so, the young man returned to his tribe as a brave man, bearing with him the wisdom of that night in the forest and the assurance that, even though we may not always see God, He is always watching over us, sitting by our side, ready to look after us in our moments of need.
