Amazon agreed to pay $2.5 billion to the FTC following years of complaints about its handling of the Prime service.

According to the agency, the company enrolled millions of users without authorization and intentionally complicated the cancellation process.

The settlement allows many consumers to receive an automatic Amazon Prime refund, depending on their individual cases.

The FTC’s investigation revealed that Amazon used deceptive interface designs, also known as “dark patterns,” to mislead users into activating automatically renewing Prime subscriptions without full awareness.

In a 2023 complaint, the FTC claimed that the company “knowingly deceived millions of consumers”, making them believe they were accessing free or trial services.

Although Amazon denied the accusations, it agreed to pay the multi-billion-dollar amount to settle the case without admitting legal liability.

“Amazon deceived and frustrated users into subscribing without consent, which caused them financial harm,” said Lina M. Khan, FTC Chair.

The ruling aims to end manipulative digital marketing practices and strengthen consumer protection in the U.S.

Who qualifies for the Amazon Prime refund

According to the FTC, the following consumers are eligible for an Amazon Prime refund:

  • Must be Amazon Prime customers in the United States.
  • Must have enrolled in Prime between June 23, 2019, and June 23, 2025, or attempted to cancel unsuccessfully.
  • Must have used fewer than three Prime benefits (such as Prime Video or Amazon Music) within a 12-month period after enrollment.

If the user meets these criteria, the refund will be automatic and deposited directly into the account linked to the original payment method.

No application or contact with Amazon or the FTC is necessary to process it.

How to avoid scams

The FTC warned that scammers might try to exploit the refund announcement to trick consumers.

Fraudsters may pretend to be Amazon or FTC representatives offering help with the refund, but the agency clarified:

  • The FTC never contacts consumers by phone, email, or text to offer money or assistance.
  • If someone asks for money, bank details, or access codes, it is a scam.

Consumers can report such cases directly at ReportFraud.ftc.gov, the FTC’s official fraud reporting portal.
